Spiced Yeast Coffee Cake

 

Coffee cake takes some time to make because of the rising time.  It is a real treat for special occasions, or just to brighten up a snowy winter afternoon.

package active dry yeast

cup warm water

cup lukewarm milk

cup sugar

teaspoon salt

large egg
1/4
cup soft shortening
2 1/4
cups all purpose flour
1/2
teaspoon mace
1/2
teaspoon nutmeg

 

 

Dissolve yeast in water and let stand for 5 minutes.  Add rest of ingredients.  Beat batter for 1 minute, at least 100 strokes.  Scrape down sides of bowl.  Cover with damp cloth and let rise in warm place until double in bulk, about 1-3/4 hours.  Beat well, 20 to 30 strokes.  Spread batter in greased 9-inch square pan.

 

Topping

cup sugar

teaspoons cinnamon

tablespoons flour

tablespoons butter

 

 

Mix topping ingredients and sprinkle over top.  Let rise until light, 35 to 45 minutes.  Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes.  Serve immediately.
