Decorating Buttercream Icing

teaspoon clear vanilla extract

tablespoons milk or water
1
cup solid vegetable shortening
1
pound powdered sugar

 

 

Sift the powdered sugar into a large mixing bowl.  Measure remaining ingredients into the same bowl.  Blend on medium speed until all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed together.  Scrape bowl when necessary.  Blend an additional minute or so, until creamy.

 

Optional:  To improve flavor, add 1 teaspoon butter extract and a pinch of salt.

 

Makes 3 cups.  May need to be doubled.  Can be thinned with more liquid if necessary.
