Prize-Winning Sugar Cookies

When my mother was growing up, she won a ribbon at the county fair with this recipe.  These cookies are still the best sugar cookies I have tasted.  The combination of the nutmeg and lemon is really good.  These cookies are also very tender, all in all, a great cookie.

1/2

cup shortening

1/2
teaspoon salt
1/2
teaspoon grated lemon rind
1/2
teaspoon nutmeg
1
cup sugar
2
eggs, well beaten
2
tablespoons milk
2
cups sifted flour
1
teaspoon baking powder
1/2
teaspoon soda

Combine and blend shortening, salt grated lemon rind and nutmeg.  Gradually add sugar to the mixture and cream well.  Add the eggs and milk; mix well.

Sift together the flour, baking powder and soda.  Add to the creamed mixture, blending well.

Drop from teaspoon on greased baking sheets.  Let stand a few minutes, then flatten cookies by stamping with a glass covered with a damp cloth.  Sprinkle with sugar.  Bake at 375° for 8 to 12 minutes.

Makes 3 1/2 dozen crisp and tender cookies.
